ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A fire destroyed an elderly couple’s home in Lincolnville just weeks before the holiday.
Action News Jax Alicia Tarancon spoke with the couple’s friend who is grateful that the two escaped unharmed.
Mary Washington rushed over to check on her friends Olivia and Charlie Brown after a massive fire tore through their home in Lincolnville early Wednesday morning.
“It’s bad enough any time but this is like a special time of the year,” Washington said.
The City of St. Augustine Fire Department had crews on scene for over eight hours.
Although nearly everything was lost in the fire Washington told me she’s glad her friends weren’t hurt.
“Thank God. You can get another house but then the memories and all the other things you know they’re never be the same,” Washington said.
Her friends are in their late 70s and they’ve lived down Cerro Street for decades.
Now more than ever they could use the support of the community.
“We all got to reach out and to help one another because you never know when you’re going to need help yourself,” Washington said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation however the State Fire Marshal does not believe this fire is suspicious.
