ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A woman in her mid-60′s is at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville with serious injuries after a boating accident at Vilano Beach Pier Saturday afternoon. The crash is under investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
FWC tells Action News Jax it was an inflatable boat, driven by a man also in his mid-60′s, that crashed just after 4 p.m.
“I was putting a rod out, and we heard a smack, and then everybody ran to this side,” Raymond Tezack, a fisherman, told Reporter Robert Grant. He said the boat crashed into the pier, sending the woman overboard.
Tezack jumped in after her but said the current was too strong.
“I kind of freaked out. I just had to get out of the water because I got taken away with the current, and I was getting nervous.”
Rescue crews were able to get the woman out and rushed her to Memorial Hospital, where she is now being treated.
FWC said the crash is currently under investigation, and they are still working to determine what caused the accident.
Action News Jax will update this story when more information is released.
