GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — 4/27/2021 update: Action News Jax has learned new details regarding a stabbing incident at Brunswick High School on Monday.
The person who was stabbed in the school’s courtyard during an altercation was a 17-year-old student.
Officials said the incident started at lunch as a physical fight, when a 15-year-old student pulled out a small pocket knife, according to The Brunswick News, a local newspaper in the area.
The 17-year-old was reportedly flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah -- not Jacksonville, as Glynn County Schools administrators were initially told by paramedics.
He is said to be in stable condition and Glynn County Schools said in a release “it is our understanding that the student is doing well and expects to come home very soon.”
The 15-year-old was taken to Waycross Youth Detention Center and he is being charged with aggravated assault.
“This was certainly an unfortunate event that we never want to see occur in our school system or any other school system. We want to remind our parents, students and community members to continue to keep the lines of communication open with school personnel so that we can all work together to keep our schools as safe as possible,” Dr. Scott Spence, superintendent of Glynn County Schools, said in a release.
Action News Jax’s Courtney Cole asked if Glynn County Schools is planning on taking any extra steps to keep students safe following the incident.
We are waiting to hear back.
