JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If you’re looking for a career, and a high-paying job, there’s a brand-new, 12-week technical training program that will be enrolling students in Springfield starting next month, and it’s welcoming people who want a leg up in the tech and cybersecurity industries.
The doors are opening in Springfield to a new school and a new future for 25 people.
“My motto, I’ll say it a thousand times, reach one, teach one, leave no one behind,” said Jeff Sims, the founder of this program and the Vice President of Sales at Sims Corporation.
The program will enroll 25 students in April at the new facility off Pearl Street, and classes kick off in June.
There will be a lot of hands-on opportunities for students to learn about topics like fiber optic cables and networking, which 18-year-old Tyler Suroweic says is the reason he plans to enroll.
“I really need that hands-on learning because if I don’t [get it], I’ll struggle with classes,” he explained.
His goal is to become an IT specialist.
“I spend a lot of time coding and getting really into depth about websites,” he described.
“[This program] is for people who want to go into it, this would be a really big job opportunity for them.”
“I’m hoping for the economic part, to increase the employment,” Sims explained of what he hopes this will achieve. “To lessen the crime. To stabilize the community in this location.”
While tuition is $10,000, before our eyes, several vowed to help fund scholarships, including the company W. W. Gaye Fire and Integrated Systems, and the City of Jacksonville’s Task Force on Safety and Crime Reduction.
Councilmember Ju’Coby Pittman also promised a check for $500 to go towards the funding of these scholarships.
“It looks like we’re sitting on at least 3 or 4, we definitely have one,” Sims said with a smile.
And where there’s room for one, there’s room for all.
“It’s for any age from 8 to 80,” Sims pointed out.
“I think 80-90 percent will think, ‘This is something I can do. This is something I wanna do,’” he described. “Especially when you’re talking about going from a $13 an hour job to a $25 or $30 an hour job.”
