Neighbors said thieves are pretending to be window washers or gutter cleaners when they steal from garages and homes.
In one Fleming Island neighborhood, surveillance video shows a man jumping out of an SUV and stealing equipment from an open garage.
Sherri Bankston said the thieves stole her generator and some of her lawn equipment.
“It’s very unnerving, considering we’re in a cul-de-sac,” she said. “We watch out for each other.”
But the thieves targeted other homes as well. Video shows one of the men trying to open another garage door.
Neighbors said the thieves were looking through the window of another garage when they were confronted by the homeowner.
“He said they were there to give estimates for gutter cleaning and window cleaning,” Bankston said.
Neighbors said there were at least three thieves involved, and they were driving around in a light-colored SUV, possibly a Toyota 4Runner.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has the surveillance video and is investigating.
