Tracking area of low pressure off Jacksonville’s coast 1 week before hurricane season

Increased risk for rip currents, high surf/seas, and gusty conditions for us locally from a coastal low as it forms and heads north.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Action News Jax First Alert Weather Team is tracking an area of low pressure forming off the southeastern U.S. coast and heading north, exactly one week before the start of hurricane season.

Meteorologist Garrett Bedenbaugh said we will see an increased risk for rip currents, high surf/seas, and gusty conditions locally from the coastal low as it forms and heads north. Here’s the latest:

  • Increased swells/seas at our local beaches
  • High rip current risk through at least Saturday
  • A few showers
  • Many dry hours
  • The low pressure moves away from our area this weekend
  • Winds out of the northeast at 15-25 mph Friday …. gusts of 30+ mph

With one week until the start of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released its seasonal outlook. NOAA predicts 12-17 named storms, 5-9 hurricanes and 1-4 major hurricanes.
