Two separate, fatal crashes confirmed by Florida Highway Patrol in St. Johns County

One of two fatal crashes was confirmed by FHP on US1 in St. Augustine on Friday night.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that two fatal crashes occurred on Friday evening in St. Johns County.

An investigation into the first crash revealed that a 77-year-old woman from San Mateo, Florida, was killed when she attempted to cross US-1, just north of Lewis Point Road, from a private driveway. The woman was struck on the driver’s side by a van.

FHP said in a report that St. Johns County Fire and Rescue responded to the scene due to entrapment and life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car was transported to the hospital where officials said she died from his injuries.

FHP confirmed the second fatal crash took place at SR-16, just west of South Francis Rd. at around 8:33 p.m. First responders arrived at the scene just after 9 p.m. All lanes of SR-16 have been closed and no time was provided on when they might open again.

FHP has confirmed two separate, fatal crashes in St. Johns County Friday evening.

According to witnesses a car slowed down on State Road 16 and a 29-year-old man exited the vehicle during an argument. He ran across the road, directly into the path of another vehicle traveling eastbound.

The driver was unable to slow down in time and the man was struck by the front of the car and rolled up the windshield. He was thrown in an easterly direction where he came to a final rest on the south shoulder of the road.

The driver was able to then pull over.

FHP said the man hit did not survive the impact of the crash and died from his injuries.
