JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It’s been a long time coming, but soon the general public will be able to walk the decks of a piece of naval history.

Beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 28, northeast Florida residents and visitors alike will be able to come aboard the USS Orleck. It is the most decorated Gearing class Destroyer.

Accessible to all guests will be the ship’s bridge, combat information center, division commander’s stateroom, galley, wardroom and mess decks. Visitors will even be able to climb into one of the main guns of the ship.

Action News Jax first reported on the arrival of the USS Orleck to downtown Jacksonville back in March of 2022.

Coverage of the destroyer at that time included a helicopter drone it carried during wartime being craned back onto its deck for visitors to see, and a former ship builder that returned to tour the ship.

The USS Orleck is located at the Jacksonville Riverwalk on 114 E. Coastline Dr. Parking will be available in the lot between the USS Orleck and the Main Street Bridge.
