Video: Troopers chase wanted suspect through Jacksonville neighborhood

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Neighbors said they have never seen anything quite like it, in the quiet, gated neighborhood. A little before noon, a police chase broke out in Stonefield. Only Action News Jax received this exclusive video:

The video showed Florida Highway Patrol pursuing a Dodge Ram speeding past homes. It eventually rammed into a marked patrol car, and then crashed into a light pole. It fell into a neighbor’s yard, leaving glass all over the driveway.

“The poles are pretty strong.” Aldin Mesic said. “I mean, he must’ve been going at least 40 mph to knock that off.”

The dramatic chase finally came to an end in front of Mesic’s town home.

Michael Thomas Huerta, 30, surrendered to law enforcement. He has a long history with police, dating back to 2007. In fact, he’s been charged with some sort of crime almost every single year since ’07, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Huerta has 15 arrests with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office:

2007 – Drug possession

2008 – Drug possession

2008 – Resisting, escape from prison jail or road camp, drugs

2008 – Drug possession

2009 – Drug possession

2009 – Drug possession

2009 – Drug possession

2009 – Drug possession

2010 – Drug possession, fleeing

2011 – Violation of probation

2011 – Marijuana possession

2013 – Armed marijuana possession, cocaine, weapon possession by felon, out of county warrant

2015 – False insurance claims

2017 – Resisting

2017 – VOP, armed possession of marijuana

Huerta got out of prison two weeks ago and is wanted in Brevard County for fleeing and eluding. FHP said when they went to serve the warrant, Huerta took off in his Dodge and began speeding in circles around the neighborhood.

“Pretty much [he] wanted to run away from them.” Mesic said. “Then the cops pretty much barricaded him here.” Mesic said he didn’t know much about his neighbor, and he mostly kept to himself.

“It was pretty much like a rude awakening.” Mesic said.

Huerta is now charged with aggravated battery on law enforcement and aggravated fleeing and eluding. He was booked into the Duval County Jail.

No one was injured in the incident.
