JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A pack of at least seven dogs has escaped their enclosure several times and neighbors said they roam free and terrorize the neighborhood.
Surveillance video showed several dogs running loose and in one case attacking and killing a pet cat on Minglewood Drive in the Brookview area.
Neighbors said at least five cats and a chicken that was caged were killed since the dogs have been getting loose over the past couple of weeks.
“I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. They got that cat off the handrail by its tail — and they just pounced. There was no surviving,” said Carlene Matthews.
Another video showed the dogs approach a family at their front door, forcing them to move back inside.
The City of Jacksonville said Animal Care and Protective Services responded to the area on Friday and captured four dogs, and two others returned home.
The dogs were released back to their home. Officers said the owner is currently in jail and the dogs are under the watch of a caretaker. A city representative said the case is still under investigation and citations are pending. Neighbors fear that’s not enough.
“My biggest concern: my mom is 88 years old. There’s no way she could fight off a pack of dogs…and what about children,” said Matthews.
Carlene said since ACPS came last week, she’s seen the dogs at least one more time.
Action News Jax’s Robert Grant visited the home where the dogs belong, but no one answered the door.
