BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Jackie Johnson will appear before a Glynn County judge Wednesday morning for a pretrial hearing. Johnson was the Georgia District Attorney overseeing the February 2020 case of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man who was chased and shot to death by three white men in a pickup truck.
Arbery was jogging through the Satilla Shores neighborhood near Brunswick when the killers, Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan chased him down.
The men, who were later convicted of murder and federal hate crimes, argued they mistakenly believed Arbery was a criminal and they shot him in self-defense.

Johnson recused her office from handling the case because Greg McMichael was a retired investigator who used to work for her. Travis McMichael, his son, shot Arbery at close range with a shotgun, while their neighbor, Bryan, joined the chase recording the entire incident on his cellphone.
The men were not arrested until that video was leaked to the media two months after Arbery’s killing.
Johnson was voted out of office and in September 2021, a Georgia grand jury indicted her on a felony count of violating her oath of office and a misdemeanor count of hindering police.
Jury selection in the case is scheduled for Jan. 21.
