“We’re currently sitting at about 1,600 acres that was burned and 50% containment on those lines,” Robert Chase with Florida Forest Service said.
More than 24 hours after Nassau County Firefighters were dispatched near CR-121 in Western Nassau County, the wildfire filled the surrounding air with smoke, leaving residents living nearby on high alert.
Fire officials are still working to learn the cause.
“Avoid the area, smoke is going to be an issue for us the later it gets through the day,” Chase said.
Chase said as a result, roadways from CR-119 to Kennard Street will be blocked off except for residents who live in the area as nearly 20 emergency crews aim to contain this wildfire and improve last night’s lines.
“That plow is going to drop in and pull all that vegetation up and create soil. So, when that fire progresses to that line it’s gonna hit that soil and hopefully stop,” Chase said.
Firefighters cannot say yet when they might be able to entirely contain the fire.
“Weather, we all know how that can change things in a heartbeat, we are going to see an uptick around 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.,” Chase said.
