Officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville

Jacksonville, FL. — Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was conducting surveillance in a nearby apartment complex around 5:53 a.m. on Old Kings South Road.

Over the radio officers heard of a nearby robbery.

Officers were able to determine that the suspect had run across the street into another apartment complex.

The suspect is 37-year-old Daniel Newton Neal, an adult black male.

As Neil ran across the street, he ran by one of JSO’s surveillance officers.

Officers chased Neal on foot until he ran into another apartment building and tired to enter.

Detective J.G. Bennett audibly announced he was police and commanded Neal to stop.

Neil was armed in this incident.

Detective Bennett fired two shots, striking Neal.

The firearm that Neal had on him was found to have been stolen from a vehicle in 2020.

Neal was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

This is Detective Bennett’s first officer-involved shooting, in 13 years with the agency.

This is the first officer-involved shooting of the year.
