NEW YORK — University of Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams was awarded the Heisman Trophy for 2022 Saturday evening.
USC is the first school to have won the Heisman Trophy eight times, according to The Associated Press.
Williams received 544 first-place votes and 2,031 points, outpoints TCU quarterback Max Duggan, according to the AP.
The last time USC had a Heisman winner was in 2005, when Reggie Bush was the second consecutive Trojans player to win the award. Bush’s win was later vacated after NCAA violations, according to the AP. Matt Leinart won the Heisman in 2004 for USC while the team was on its way to a national championship. Other schools that have seven Heisman trophies include Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma.
Williams broke USC’s single-season touchdown record, plus he was able to add another 10 on the ground, according to Fox Sports. He scored three or more touchdowns in about 10 games this season. This includes four with five touchdowns.
Williams also won the Maxwell Award on Thursday evening, according to Fox Sports. This award is given to the best player in college football.
Williams will be leading the USC Trojans against Tulane on Jan. 2 in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl, according to Fox Sports.
This year’s Heisman Trophy ceremony took place Saturday at the Lincoln Center in New York, according to the AP.
The Heisman Memorial Trophy recognizes one outstanding college football player every year whose performance demonstrates excellence in the sport, along with integrity, according to Sports Illustrated.
Finalists for the Heisman Trophy this year included quarterbacks Stetson Bennett of Georgia, Max Duggan of TCU, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Williams of the University of Southern California, according to the AP. They were announced as finalists last Monday evening.
The winner is determined by a vote of more than 900 journalists and former winners, according to the AP.
