According to Los Angeles police, a pedestrian was clipped by one vehicle in front of the Pacific Resident Theatre on Venice Boulevard, fell and was fatally struck by a second vehicle. Investigators told the TV station initial indications are that the collisions were accidental.
Bean, whose career spanned more than seven decades, appeared in such films as “Being John Malkovich,” “Miracle on 34th Street” and “The Equalizer 2.”
According to TMZ, Bean was also a frequent guest on “The Tonight Show” and a recurring game show fixture on “To Tell the Truth” from the late 1950s through 1991. He also appeared on “Super Password,” “The Match Game,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “7th Heaven,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Modern Family” and “Desperate Housewives.”
He most appeared most recently on “Superstore,” KABC reported.
Bean had been married to actress Alley Mills, whom witnesses told KABC was at the scene of the accident, for 27 years.
The couple had been performing together in a Ruskin Group Theatre production of “Bad Habits,” which just finished its schedule run in Santa Monica last week, the TV station reported.
Reaction to his passing flooded social media early Saturday morning.
Say a prayer for the legendary, hysterical, beloved Orson Bean tonight. He was my neighbor and my friend. He never stopped delighting audiences, even when it was just me getting the paper. He was as encouraging and inspiring and energetic a mentor as you could hope to meet.

A tragic accident. What a horrible loss. Orson Bean was such a talented, funny, and lovely man. At 91, he was still acting. He gave such pleasure with his roles on tv, stage and screen, but my favorite was as Loren Bray on "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman." https://t.co/DElexpgCTp

So sad to hear of the death of actor Orson Bean. He was fatally struck by a car in Venice. He was 91. I had the pleasure of interviewing him 2 months ago about his life, his career & his love of theatre. “You do movies & TV for a living and it’s okay...but theatre is what’s fun.” pic.twitter.com/q8Vr7Iv9Uy
