Coming soon: $3 movie tickets for one day only

Labor Day weekend is one of the slowest weekends for movie theaters. To spike audience interest, tickets are going to be $3 -- for one day only.

The Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, on Sunday announced that Sept. 3 will be a nationwide discount day, The Associated Press reported. National Cinema Day will debut in more than 3,000 theaters and on more than 30,000 screens nationwide.

That includes every show, and in every format available for moviegoers.

Major chains, including AMC and Regal Cinemas, are participating, along with all major film studios, the AP reported.

Before each showing, ticket buyers will be shown a reel of upcoming films from A24, Amazon Studios, Disney, Focus Features, Lionsgate, Neon, Paramount, Sony Pictures Classics, Sony, United Artists Releasing, Universal, and Warner Bros., according to the news organization.

“After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” said Jackie Brenneman, Cinema Foundation president, in a statement. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”

“It’s about getting moviegoers back into cinemas at a typical slow time for moviegoing,” John Fithian, head of the National Association of Theater Owners, told Business Insider.
