BALTIMORE — Nearly one year after a cargo ship got stuck in the Suez Canal, another ship from the Evergreen Marine Corp.’s fleet has gotten stuck, this time in Chesapeake Bay.
The Ever Forward, a 1,095-foot container ship, ran aground on Sunday night near Baltimore, WJZ reported.
The Ever Forward is part of the same fleet of cargo ships as the Ever Given, also owned by Evergreen Marine Corp., which got stuck in the Suez Canal last year, WMAR reported. The Ever Given was stuck for nearly a week, bringing global trade to a halt, as we reported at the time.
Video posted to YouTube by Chesapeake Bay Media shows the ship stopped in the water, loaded with containers.
The U.S. Coast Guard told WBAL that The Ever Forward was outside the normal shipping channel, so it did not pose any threat to navigation. The Coast Guard also told the station there was no damage, pollution, or injuries reported.
The channel the ship was supposed to be in is estimated to be about 50 feet deep, while the ship ran aground in water that is about 25 feet deep, WJZ reported. Investigators don’t yet know why the ship left the channel.
“Efforts have been underway to try and free the ship,” William Doyle, Maryland Port Administration executive director, said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. Evergreen Marine Corp. told The Wall Street Journal it has sent divers to check the ship for damage and is working to help the efforts to refloat the ship and get it moving.
