Coppertone recalling 5 sunscreens due to presence of benzene

Coppertone is voluntarily recalling five of its aerosol sunscreen sprays due to the presence of benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer in humans.

In a company announcement published Thursday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, officials announced the recall of 12 lots of sunscreen sprays manufactured between Jan. 10 and June 15 after detecting benzene in the products. The company noted that it had received no reports of adverse effects or injuries related to the recall.

“Daily exposure to benzene at the levels detected in these affected Coppertone aerosol sunscreen spray products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences based on generally accepted exposure modeling by numerous regulatory agencies,” the announcement read.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling certain lots of these specific aerosol sunscreen spray products.”

The affected products and lots were identified as:

  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Baby SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray: Lot No. TN0083J, Lot No. TN0083K, Lot No. TN009GH
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray: Lot No. TN00854, Lot No. TN00855, Lot No. TN00857, Lot No. TN00CJV
  • Coppertone Sport Mineral SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray: Lot No. TN008KU, Lot No. TN008KV
  • Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray: Lot No. TN00BR2, Lot No. TN00CJ4
  • Travel-size Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 501.6 oz aerosol sunscreen spray: Lot No. TN00BU3

Officials said the products were distributed across the U.S. through various retailers. Consumers who have any of the affected products were advised to stop using them and dispose of them.

Consumers can also request a product refund online.
