Coronavirus: Michigan State football team to quarantine or isolate for 2 weeks

All members of the Michigan State University football team were ordered to quarantine or self-isolate for the next two weeks after a second staff member and a player tested positive for the coronavirus, school officials said Friday.

“As part of the athletic department’s return to campus policy, student-athletes quarantine when coming into close contact with an individual who tests positive for COVID-19,” university officials said in a statement. “The university has designated areas available to house individuals in quarantine as needed based upon the living arrangements of student-athletes.”

The announcement followed a decision Wednesday that the Spartans’ program was stopping all workouts after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19, MLive reported.

The school will conduct another round of surveillance testing before making a decision about resuming workouts, ESPN reported.

Earlier Friday, senior offensive lineman Jordan Reid posted to social media, discussing his concerns about continuing to practice, The Detroit News reported.

“Guys are testing positive across the country left and right ... why is there still discussion on a season?” Reid tweeted. “Why is it taking so long to make a logical decision? Hmm let me guess REVENUE #NCAA #B1G10”

All players must isolate or quarantine, but only staff members who have tested positive or have exhibited symptoms will be subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine, the sports network reported.

A Michigan State spokesperson said the quarantine or isolation period began Wednesday, meaning it would last through Aug. 4, MLive reported. Fall camp is scheduled to start Aug. 7.
