Coronavirus: Total US COVID-19 cases top 60M; Texas becomes 2nd state to top 5M infections

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 60 million on Sunday, with nearly 10 million new coronavirus infections reported during the past 28 days.

Meanwhile, Texas on Sunday became only the second U.S. state to surpass 5 million cumulative COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began, trailing only California with nearly 6.1 million total cases.

By late Sunday afternoon, U.S. COVID-19 cases totaled 60,062,077, and the nationwide death toll neared 838,000, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally. The latest figures include nearly 380,000 COVID-19 cases and 679 virus-related fatalities reported within the 24-hour period ended at 1 a.m. EST on Sunday.

According to Johns Hopkins data, five million new COVID-19 cases have been reported nationwide since Jan. 2, and 8 million new cases have been confirmed in the 15 days since Christmas.

Meanwhile, global cases are nearing 307 million and have resulted in nearly 5.5 million virus-related fatalities worldwide. New U.S. COVID-19 infections reported within the past 28 days now account for nearly 28% of the more than 35 million cases confirmed globally during the same four-week period, according to Johns Hopkins data.

France and the United Kingdom are the next-closest nations in terms of surging COVID-19 diagnoses, with more than 3.6 million and nearly 3.6 million new cases, respectively, confirmed within the past 28 days, according to the Johns Hopkins data.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases in Florida and New York have swelled to more than 4.6 million and more than 4.1 million, respectively, while Illinois, Pennsylvania and Ohio have each reported more than 2 million cumulative cases.

The following 13 other states have confirmed at least 1 million cases:

  • Georgia: More than 1.9 million cases, resulting in more than 31,000 deaths.
  • Michigan: Nearly 1.9 million cases, resulting in nearly 30,000 deaths.
  • New Jersey: More than 1.8 million cases, resulting in more than 29,000 deaths.
  • North Carolina: More than 1.8 million cases, resulting in nearly 20,000 deaths.
  • Tennessee: Nearly 1.5 million cases, resulting in nearly 21,000 deaths.
  • Arizona: Nearly 1.5 million cases, resulting in nearly 25,000 deaths.
  • Indiana: More than 1.3 million cases, resulting in nearly 20,000 deaths.
  • Massachusetts: Nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in nearly 21,000 deaths.
  • Virginia: More than 1.2 million cases, resulting in nearly 16,000 deaths.
  • Wisconsin: Nearly 1.2 million cases, resulting in more than 11,000 deaths.
  • Missouri: More than 1.1 million cases, resulting in nearly 17,000 deaths.
  • Minnesota: Nearly 1.1 million cases, resulting in nearly 11,000 deaths.
  • South Carolina: More than 1 million cases, resulting in nearly 15,000 deaths.

Fourteen other states have reported at least half a million cases, including Colorado, Alabama, Washington, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Oklahoma, Utah, Arkansas, Iowa, Mississippi, Connecticut, Kansas and Nevada.
