Former postal employee fined for not delivering 701 pieces of mail

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A former postal worker has been fined only $200 after pleading guilty to not delivering 701 pieces of mail last year.

Brandon Wilson, 27, was stopped by Customs and Border Protection Officers on Nov. 3, 2020, at the Peace Bridge. He was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service and had both his USPS uniform and identification with him, WKBW reported.

Officers said they found hundreds of pieces of mail inside his trunk.

According to the Department of Justice, some of the mail included:

• Three absentee ballots
• 218 first-class mailings
• 106 political mailings
• 36 nonprofit mailings
• 305 standard mailings
• 33 magazines or catalogs

All of it was destined for 14227, 14211, 14214 and 14215 ZIP codes in the Buffalo, New York, area. Most of it was destined for the 14215 area, the Niagara Gazette reported. All of the mail had cancelations from Sept. 16 through Oct. 26, 2020.

When asked about the mail, Wilson first told officers that it was all his and his mother’s mail but when they asked about the names and addresses he said he was a USPS carrier who kept the mail he was not able to deliver, WKBW reported.

Wilson pleaded guilty in federal court to delay or destruction of U.S. Mail, the Niagara Gazette reported.
