TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — A woman whose granddaughter drowned in a Georgia lake despite her efforts to rescue her, has died.
Investigators told WSB-TV that 49-year-old Stephanie Walker died after trying to pull 13-year-old Makayla Prather from West Point Lake last Saturday.
Deputies said that Walker jumped into the lake to save Prather but became “distressed” herself when she also started to have trouble in the water, WSB-TV reported.
Deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office said that Walker was not breathing and unresponsive when they pulled her from the water. Prather’s body was not found for several hours until a dive team came to assist deputies and the Department of Natural Resources.
