GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A suspect who allegedly injured a young girl and her parents in a shooting in Gaston County, North Carolina, turned himself in to officials in Tampa, Florida, Thursday evening.
In a news release, Gaston County Police Department officials said that just before 5 p.m., officers were notified by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office that Robert Louis Singletary, 24, had turned himself in. Singletary was reportedly the suspect in the shooting Tuesday night in Gaston County.
Police say Singletary did not have identification on him when he turned himself in but the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was able to confirm his identity just before 7 p.m. Thursday.
Police identified the victims of the shooting as William James White, Ashley Hildebrand, a juvenile who was not named by police, and Derrick Kenneth Prather. White was shot and remains hospitalized in serious condition. Hildebrand was grazed by a gunshot. She was treated and released from the hospital. The juvenile was also grazed by a bullet and was treated and released as well. Prather was reportedly shot at but was not struck.
Several young children were playing basketball when the ball rolled down the street and into Singletary’s yard, WSOC reported. Singletary got angry about the ball, police said, retrieved a gun, and ran down the street firing it.
Gaston County Police Department officials said they responded to a call that came in at 7:44 p.m. on Tuesday concerning a shooting and found four people who had been shot. WSOC identified the juvenile as 6-year-old Kinsley White.
Singletary is expected to make a court appearance on Friday in Hillsborough County in reference to extradition back to North Carolina, police say.
Singletary has been charged by Gaston County officials with four counts of attempted first-degree murder; two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflicting serious injury; and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, according to a statement from police on Wednesday.
