AGUILILLA, Mexico — Two people have died after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Mexico’s Michoacan state early Thursday, officials said.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake, which occurred at 1:16 a.m. CDT, was centered about 30.9 miles south-southwest of Aguililla at a depth of 15 miles.

Update 5:09 a.m. EDT Sept. 22: A second person has died after Thursday’s earthquake, officials said overnight.
Shortly before 4 a.m. EDT, Mexico City’s Secretariat of Citizen Security tweeted that a man died from a heart attack in Coyoacan.
Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum took to social media to offer condolences to the victims’ families.
“Two people died after the earthquake in Mexico,” she tweeted in Spanish. “From the government of Mexico City, we support the families and extend our solidarity.”
Meanwhile, the Michoacan government said a building was damaged in Uruapan and landslides occurred on a highway, according to The Associated Press.
Update 3:45 a.m. EDT Sept. 22: Sheinbaum tweeted shortly before 3:30 a.m. EDT that a woman in the Doctores neighborhood died after falling down the stairs of her home and hitting her head, according to the AP.

Thursday’s quake came just days after a deadly 7.6 magnitude temblor struck near the border of Mexico’s Michoacan and Colima states Monday, killing at least two people, the AP reported.
