GREENVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina woman has been charged with child abuse after hospital personnel found signs of horrific abuse while treating her toddler.
Nikki Manning, 30, of Greenville, is charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious physical injury, according to Pitt County Sheriff’s Office officials.
Investigators were called last week to Vidant Medical Center, where Manning had taken her 20-month-old son for treatment.
“Hospital staff alerted the Pitt County Department of Social Services due to finding multiple injuries on the child, including the loss of multiple fingernails and toenails,” authorities said in a news release.
NewsChannel 12 in New Bern reported that the boy also tested positive for both cocaine and methamphetamine.
