WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a free app Thursday that alerts drivers when their vehicles have been recalled.
SaferCar informs car owners when a recall has been issued and instructs them on what to do next.
Owners key in or scan their 17-digit vehicle identification number, and the app searches the agency’s database for recalls. If there is one, the app will send an alert, the agency says.
Users can search multiple vehicles using the app, and also check for recalls on child seats, trailers and tires.
Vehicle owners can get the app through the Google Play Store by searching for “SaferCar.” It will also be available in the Apple Store. Full information about the app can be found at https://www.nhtsa.gov/safercar-app.
