KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri police reportedly found the body of a missing man in the trunk of his car — but only after the vehicle had been towed to the station.
Adam “A.J.” Blackstock Jr., 24, of Kansas City, was found dead inside his car on Jan. 17. According to The Kansas City Star, city police are investigating his death as a homicide.
Police officials have defended how investigators first handled the situation. They didn’t have a search warrant when they towed his car, but Blackstock had been officially reported missing.
A forensic expert reportedly told the newspaper that officers should have looked inside the car before they moved it.
Kansas City Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jake Becchina told the newspaper last week that investigators are working towards identifying persons of interest in the case. No charges had been filed as of Monday evening.
According to the AP, Blackstock’s father said that he was unable to get a hold of his son, so he used GPS to locate the younger man’s car.
He found it under a gray tarp in the driveway of a Kansas City home, the AP reported.
When officers arrived at the home, the resident allegedly told officers that the car belonged to her uncle and gave them his phone number.
Blackstock’s father was able to prove the car was his son’s, however, by using a remote key to start the engine. According to the AP, officers were able to persuade the woman to remove the car from her driveway.
The officers reportedly noticed a bullet hole in the driver’s seat and blood on the floorboard but did not investigate any further, according to the AP. After towing the car, they saw Blackstock’s lifeless body in the back.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.
