FOREST HILL, Texas — A police officer is in critical condition after she was shot during a training exercise at an elementary school.
The Forest Hill Police Department said in a news release that it was hosting a school-based active shooter training on Nov. 5 attended by officers from Forest Hill and Sansom Park. One of the Sansom Park officers in attendance was shot during the training, receiving a single gunshot wound.
Police said the training was overseen by a third-party training contractor, and was not a live-fire training and weapons were prohibited.
“The training provider is the one that provided the weapons,” Everman Police Chief Craig Spencer, speaking on behalf of the Forest Hill Police Department, told WFAA. “And this was not a live fire training. That’s all I know. How a weapon was introduced, we don’t know. And that’s what we’re hopeful the investigation will turn over.”
The officer, identified as Lisa Mino, was shot in the face and remains in the hospital in critical condition, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
A GoFundMe established for Mino said that she underwent surgery successfully, but will require additional surgeries in the future, and is raising money for medical expenses as well as travel expenses for her family.
Police have not said who fired the weapon.
“At this time, there is not any reason to believe that there is a criminal element here, but obviously, anytime we have a shooting like this we will conduct a thorough and proper investigation into it,” Spencer told KDFW. “This is a truly tragic situation all the way around. This is not something that is common.”
Neighboring police departments lent officers to help the Sansom Police Department after the shooting. The White Settlement Police Department shared photos on Twitter after finishing a 12-hour shift to allow Sansom’s officers to be in the hospital.
