MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A United States Postal Service employee is facing charges after allegedly stealing a mail truck and leading police on a chase going the wrong way down a busy highway.
Moon Township police told WPXI that the incident began when the USPS employee, identified as Tyler Floro, refused to return his mail truck on Sunday afternoon.
State police found Floro driving the truck in the southbound lanes of Interstate 79 in Waynesburg and tried to pull him over. Instead of stopping, Floro allegedly went through the highway’s median and began driving south in the northbound lanes of the highway, WPXI reported.
“People started pulling over on the shoulder and I was going to go around the truck in front of me and as I’m going around, I see a mail truck coming up the center of the highway at me,” Daniel Freeman, who was driving on I-79 at the time, told WPXI. “It’s surreal. All those clichés hit you, your life flashes in front of your eyes and I was scared.”
Freeman’s dash cam captured the wild scene as the mail truck drove against traffic with police behind it. At that point, the mail truck had been on the wrong side of the road for more than two miles, according to WPXI.
“Guy came by he was all dressed in his uniform; he had a smile on his face like he was just going out for a Sunday ride the wrong way up the interstate,” Freeman told the station.
State troopers stopped the mail truck and took Floro into custody.
A spokeswoman for the state police told WPXI that Floro was under the influence of drugs and was in possession of drug paraphernalia.
USPS did not comment on Floro’s status with the agency.
