Rapper Kodak Black arrested in South Florida on oxycodone charge

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Rapper Kodak Black was arrested in South Florida on charges of trafficking in oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, authorities said.

Black, 25, of Miramar, whose legal name is Bill Kapri, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and trafficking oxycodone of less than 25 grams, according to Broward County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Update 5:50 p.m. EDT July 16: Bail for the rapper was set at $75,000 on the trafficking charge, the Miami Herald reported. Bail has yet to be set on the possession charge, according to the newspaper.

Original report: Kapri was stopped by the Florida Highway Patrol for illegal window tint and expired tags, according to the Sun-Sentinel, which cited a report by radio personality Andy Slater.

The Miami Herald, citing a report sent to the newspaper by FHP Lt. Alex Camacho, said that Kapri was driving a purple Dodge Durango in Fort Lauderdale when he was pulled over at about 4:30 p.m. EDT. The report stated that officers thought the window tints “appeared to be darker than the legal limit,” and observed that the vehicle’s registration tag was expired, according to the newspaper.

Troopers eventually searched the vehicle and found 31 oxycodone pills and $74,960 in cash, WPLG-TV reported.

Black was born Dieuson Octave in Pompano Beach, according to the television station. He grew up in the city’s Golden Acres housing projects, WPLG reported.

Kapri was being held without bail in the Broward County Jail, online records show.

The rapper’s arrest comes a week before his anticipated performance at Rolling Loud, a national hip-hop festival at Hard Rock Stadium, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

His breakout hit, “Tunnel Vision,” cracked the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts, peaking at No. 6 in March 2017.

In November 2019, authorities sentenced Kapri to 46 months in prison for making a false statement on a federal document. In January 2021, President Donald Trump commuted his sentence, calling him “a prominent artist and community leader.” In a statement, Trump noted that the rapper “has paid for the notebooks of school children, provided funding and supplies to day care centers, provided food for the hungry and annually provides for underprivileged children during Christmas.”

Authorities in South Florida arrested Kapri in January 2022 on suspicion of trespassing.
