Recall alert: Ford recalls 737,000 vehicles for oil leaks, failing trailer brakes

DETROIT — Ford has issued two recalls for its vehicles that impact more than 737 automobiles on the road for both oil leaks and a problem with the trailer braking system.

Ford announced 345,451 vehicles are impacted by the oil leak recall, which covers the 2020-2022 Ford Escape SUV as well as the 2021 and 2022 Bronco Sport SUV with 1.5-liter engines. In the impacted SUVs, a housing can crack and allow oil to leak onto engine parts, posing a fire hazard, The Associated Press reported.

Dealers will inspect the impacted SUVs for leaks and replace parts as needed for free. Letters are expected to be sent to owners from April 18.

Ford also announced it was recalling 391,836 pickup trucks and SUVs over the potential to lose trailer brake functionality. The brake recall covers F-150 pickups from 2021 and 2022, the 2022 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550, as well as the 2022 Maverick pickup, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator.

Ford said a software error can stop trailers attached to the vehicles from braking, increasing the risk of a crash, The Associated Press reports. Owners will be sent letters beginning April 18, and they will be able to go to a dealer to have their vehicle’s software updated.
