LVIV, Ukraine — Russian missiles struck an airbase in western Ukraine near the Polish border on Sunday, killing 35 people and injuring 134.
Missiles were launched at the training center in Yavoriv, which is 15 miles from Ukraine’s closest border point to Poland, The Associated Press reported. Poland has been a key entry point for routing Western military aid to Ukraine.
Maksym Kozytskyy, the governor of Lviv, said the death toll had risen from nine, according to The Guardian. The governor said Russian forces fired more than 30 missiles at the base, the news outlet reported.
Lviv had not been subjected to the same intense bombing as eastern Ukrainian cities, including the capital city of Kyiv. Lviv had become a major destination for refugees fleeing the country, the AP reported.
The training center in Yavoriv, also known as the International Peacekeeping and Security Center, is used to train Ukrainian military personnel, according to the AP. Ukraine held most of its drills with NATO countries at the base before the Russians launched their invasion 18 days ago, The Guardian reported.
