The El Paso resident struck the alleged thief with a machete in the face, sending Carlos Esteban Villaescusa, 22, to an area hospital with serious wounds, KVIA reported.

According to the El Paso Police Department, the resident was awakened at around 4:15 a.m. MDT by the sound of breaking glass, KFOX reported.

The homeowner confronted Villaescusa, who was attempting to break into the house with a metal rod, the television station reported.

“Armed with a machete, the homeowner told the man to leave,” Sgt. Enrique Carrillo, a police spokesperson, told reporters. “But a confrontation ensued and the homeowner struck the intruder in the face with the machete.”

Villaescusa attempted to flee when police officers arrived, but he was caught after jumping into the backyard of another home in the neighborhood, KVIA reported.

According to police, Villaescusa will be booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility and charged with burglary, evading arrest, criminal mischief and criminal trespassing when he is released from the hospital, the television station reported.
