Widower forgives drunk driver who killed JSO bailiff Cathy Adams

The drunk driver who hit and killed a JSO bailiff Cathy Adams and injured her husband, Jack, was sentenced to 15 years in prison Friday.

In a powerful moment inside the St. Johns County courtroom, Jack forgave the defendant Kim Johnston.

“What do you say to the person that changed your life forever? I have pondered this question for months and still struggle with the answer,” Jack said as he read his victim impact statement.

Those are the words of a heartbroken man who in an instant not only became a widower but also a single dad.

Jack took the stand Friday to address the woman who killed his wife.

“While I believe you should spend a significant time in jail Ms. Johnston, I wish you no ill will,” he continued.

The judge called Kim Johnston’s actions that December night “selfish” for getting behind the wheel drunk.

Cathy’s mom described what it was like to witness her grandchildren by her daughter’s hospital bed.

“They told her over and over how much they loved her, and then they had to say goodbye. I was there, I saw the last kiss Holly and Jake will ever get to give to their mother,” said Trudy Martin.

Jack said he was basically a quadriplegic following the crash.

He still goes to therapy three to four times a week.

“The only way that I would be able to fully heal is if I forgave her for what she did to our family,” said Jack.

Before being sentenced, Johnston took the stand and apologized.

“I’m truly sorry. I ask for forgiveness and thank you for giving me your forgiveness,” said Johnston.

This Monday marks one year since the tragedy.

With the holidays only days away Jack had this message.

“Enjoy yourself but if you get behind the wheel of a car please, please don’t drink,” he said.

Through his grief Jack still refers to Cathy in the present tense.

“Always and forever,” said Jack.

Both parties will meet again in February to discuss payment of restitution.
