Urban Meyer named Jacksonville Jaguars’ new head coach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars have named Urban Meyer as the team’s new head coach.

Meyer, a three-time national college champion coach, will become the team’s seventh head coach in the team’s history.

“This is a great day for Jacksonville and Jaguars fans everywhere,” Jaguars Owner Shad Khan said in a release from the team. “Urban Meyer is who we want and need, a leader, winner and champion who demands excellence and produces results. While Urban already enjoys a legacy in the game of football that few will ever match, his passion for the opportunity in front of him here in Jacksonville is powerful and unmistakable. I am proud to name Urban Meyer the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.”

Meyer said he is excited for his future with the Jaguars.

“I’m ready to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars,” Meyer said in the release. “Jacksonville has an enthusiastic fan base, and the fans deserve a winning team. With upcoming opportunities in the NFL Draft, and strong support from ownership, the Jaguars are well-positioned to become competitive. I’ve analyzed this decision from every angle—the time is right in Jacksonville, and the time is right for me to return to coaching. I’m excited about the future of this organization and our long term prospect for success.”

Meyer was sighted in Jacksonville on Thursday and reports indicated that he was in talks to become the next Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach.

Meyer is one of the best winners of all-time and the Jacksonville Jaguars could certainly use a winner to turn things around.

Meyer rumors have been flying for weeks about the former Florida Gators head coach getting back on the sideline and making the jump to the NFL.

Meyer has won at all his stops as a head coach: Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State.

He won two national championships with the Gators and another with the Buckeyes.

There are only two coaches with better records in the history of college football: Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy, both with Notre Dame. Meyer’s bowl game record is 12-3, second best in history.

Meyer has also got the best out of the quarterbacks he’s been around.

At Utah, Alex Smith was the number one overall pick.

At Florida, it was Chris Leak and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.

At Ohio State, he won a national championship in 2014 with three different quarterbacks playing (Braxton Miller, JT Barrett, Cardale Jones).

Of course, the Jaguars have the number one overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and Trevor Lawrence is almost a lock to be that selection.
