JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Will there be snow in Jacksonville like there was in 1989? How many freezes can we expect this winter? First Alert Meteorologist Garrett Bedenbaugh answers these questions in an extended winter weather forecast for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

Quick facts about Jacksonville area winter weather:

How many freezes does Jacksonville see on average per season? 18

How many freezes did we see last winter? 14

Last February was tied for the warmest on record for Jacksonville

Last year, we saw winter weather -- mainly icing -- north and west of Jacksonville on January 3.

Rainfall is expected to be above average due to an active subtropical jet from El Nino.

Temperatures will be warm in the short term but then near or slightly below average due to increased rainfall and clouds from El Nino.

Comments from Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh:

El Nino winters are known in Florida for winter tornado outbreaks. Global ocean temperatures this winter are rather "peculiar" -- quite warm overall.

Upper level ridge is trying to rebuild over or near Florida -- similar to September/October/early November pattern.
